Campaign group HyNot has filed a judicial review challenging the development of the HyNet carbon capture and storage facility in the North West of England. HyNot argues that the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, along with the Oil and Gas Authority, failed to properly assess the risk of major accidents and the impacts on climate change when granting permission for the HyNet development.
The project proposes repurposing existing natural gas pipelines and offshore undersea storage to transport and store carbon dioxide (CO2). HyNot contends that carbon storage is an ineffective solution for climate change and could perpetuate fossil fuel use. The group is seeking to quash the decisions by the Secretary of State and the Oil and Gas Authority.
