The Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Coalition (mCDR Coalition) has launched to support the responsible growth of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The coalition brings together global leaders from business, nonprofits and academia to advance research, inform evidence-based policy engagement, and build links between science, conservation and governance.
Active members include Banyu Carbon, Captura, Capture6, Ebb Carbon, Equatic, Isometric, Limenet, Planetary, Puro.earth, SeaO2, Vesta and Vycarb. The coalition is co-chaired by the Carbon Business Council and the World Ocean Council, with Toby Bryce, Policy Advisor to the Carbon Business Council, serving as Chair.
The mCDR Coalition aims to provide a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration across mCDR pathways and perspectives. The launch comes amid rising global focus on mCDR approaches which, when responsibly developed and guided by science, could complement emissions reductions and contribute to global climate goals. The coalition’s formation follows recent developments, including Planetary’s XPRIZE Carbon Removal award, and an issue brief from the Carbon Business Council that highlights the importance of robust environmental and social safeguards.
The coalition is part of a broader Carbon Business Council initiative to support scaling carbon removal across diverse pathways, creating verticals for deeper collaboration while reinforcing the sector’s collective strength. It represents the first dedicated forum of its kind for mCDR and supports the World Ocean Council’s role in the EU SEAO2-CDR project to expand international awareness, engagement and participation in ocean-based carbon removal.
